Are new jobs good jobs?
Tufts University PhD Project
To what extent are platform companies creating good work for Kenyans? What does good work mean in a context of low employment?
This project will answer some fundamental questions about what platforms mean for workers—especially young workers—and will engage stakeholders around thinking through those implications. It focuses on Nairobi, a city where platforms are already beginning to reconfigure labor markets. The project looks at the labor market experiences, expectations, and aspirations of youth working in four sectors impacted by platforms: transportation, work for hire, retail, and digital task outsourcing. It also takes a deep dive into measuring dimensions of quality of work—including wages—for platform workers in a single sector, transportation, where the platform labor market is more extensive and mature.
